Recently, we embarked on a breathtaking journey through the rich history and cultural heritage of Albania, exploring some of the country’s most fascinating archaeological sites: Durres, Byllis, Oricum, Apollonia, Burtint, and Finiq.

Our first stop was Durres, one of the most important cities in Albania and home to some of the country’s most interesting archaeological sites. Founded by the Greeks in the 7th century BCE, Durres was an important center of commerce and culture for centuries. We marveled at the impressive Roman amphitheater, triumphal arch, and public buildings, as well as the early Christian basilicas and remains of a medieval castle.

Next, we journeyed to Byllis, a well-preserved ancient city located in the southwestern part of the country. Founded in the 4th century BCE, Byllis was a major center of Illyrian culture and commerce. We were awed by the theater, city wall, and public buildings, as well as the Roman bathhouse, early Christian basilica, and massive water supply system. The view from Byllis overlooking the Vjloca river was simply breathtaking.

Our journey continued to Oricum, a strategically important ancient city located on the Albanian coast. It was an important naval base for the Romans and was used as a staging post for their invasions of Greece and the eastern Mediterranean. We were amazed by the city’s walls, towers, and gates, as well as the Roman bathhouse and early Christian basilica.

We then traveled to Apollonia, another major ancient city in Albania. Founded in the 7th century BCE, Apollonia was a thriving center of culture, commerce, and religion. We were captivated by the grandiose theater, monumental gate, and several temples dedicated to different gods.

Our next stop was Burtint, a fascinating ancient city located in central Albania. This city was an important center of Illyrian culture and was renowned for its rich artistic and intellectual heritage. We were impressed by the theater, city wall, and public buildings, as well as the Roman bathhouse, early Christian basilica, and massive water supply system.

Finally, we visited Finiq, a small but historically rich town located in the southern part of Albania. The town was founded by the Greek colonists and was an important center of commerce and culture in the ancient world. We explored the remains of the town’s walls, towers, and public buildings, as well as the early Christian basilicas and ancient cisterns.

Throughout our journey, we also experienced the warm hospitality of the Albanian people and savored their delicious cuisine. From fresh seafood to traditional dishes made with locally grown ingredients, the food in Albania was simply delicious.

Additionally, we were also struck by the natural beauty of Albania. From rolling hills and dense forests to pristine beaches and crystal-clear lakes, the country is a nature lover’s paradise.

All in all, our journey through the Albanian archaeological sites was a truly unforgettable experience. We were amazed by the rich history and cultural heritage of this unique country, and we look forward to our next visit.
